Speaker:

Nothing will happen today.

2

:

That requires a drink.

3

:

But it doesn't always feel that way

in the networking world, alcohol and

4

:

networking events have become intertwined.

5

:

In the fabric of corporate

culture around the world.

6

:

Whether it's industry conferences,

business dinners, or casual

7

:

meetups, the presence of alcohol

often permeates these gatherings.

8

:

Well, alcohol can serve as a social

lubricant, fostering comradery and

9

:

easing tension in professional settings.

10

:

Is pervasive presence can also pose

significant risks and challenges.

11

:

Welcome to episode 1 92 of this shit

works, a podcast dedicated to all

12

:

things, networking, relationship

building and business development.

13

:

I'm your host, Julie Brown.

14

:

Speaker author and networking coach.

15

:

And today I am giving five

tips to navigating networking

16

:

events without drinking.

17

:

Originally this podcast episode was

supposed to be an interview with Ryan.

18

:

Penley a sober coach and the

author of man up sober up eight

19

:

powerful steps to reclaim respect.

20

:

Conquer isolation and thrive in recovery.

21

:

But Ryan's wife went into early

labor with the birth, their sons.

22

:

So yeah, he had more pressing matters

and we had to cancel our interview and

23

:

we will reschedule it for a later date.

24

:

But because I had done the research for

this episode and because I think it's an

25

:

important topic to discuss, I wanted to

bring it to you as a solo episode with

26

:

a followup discussion with Ryan later.

27

:

You know, I've been toying with the

idea of, and I hate this saying,

28

:

but for lack of a better term,

taking a break from alcohol lately.

29

:

Uh, just because it seems that so

many of my activities revolve around

30

:

the consumption of alcohol, whether

that's drinks with friends, networking

31

:

events, operate ski drinks, it

just seems to always be in the mix.

32

:

You know, and lately I've seen

a shift in the thinking or ideas

33

:

around drinking in the larger

lexicon, in the larger social fabric.

34

:

Maybe it's due to the popularity of

sober October and dry January, but there

35

:

just seems to be a greater appreciation

for not just people who are sober, but

36

:

people who are sober, curious as well.

37

:

So, if you are sober, curious, or you

want to take a break from drinking.

38

:

, networking events where alcohol

is, the centerpiece of that

39

:

event can be a daunting task.

40

:

You know, but with the right

mindset and strategies, you and we

41

:

can confidently network and make

meaningful connections without

42

:

feeling out of place without drinking.

43

:

So let's dive into five tips on how to

navigate networking events, or maybe

44

:

even social situations, Sans alcohol.

45

:

One would be know your, why, why are

you attending this networking event?

46

:

It's not to drink.

47

:

If it was you just go to any old bar.

48

:

You're there to network.

49

:

You're there to meet people to reconnect

with people you already have in your

50

:

network to make strategic introductions.

51

:

It's so much more than just drinking.

52

:

Have any clear purpose of

why you're going there?

53

:

We'll keep you focused and

motivated throughout the event,

54

:

regardless of the environment.

55

:

Too.

56

:

Research the event.

57

:

Now you should be doing this before

any networking event, regardless

58

:

of if you're going to drink or not.

59

:

But if you aren't drinking, look

for information on the format

60

:

of the event, like the agenda.

61

:

Any non-alcoholic options that

might be available, knowing what

62

:

to expect, can alleviate anxiety

and help you prepare accordingly.

63

:

I do this actually mostly

with the food, like when I was

64

:

vegetarian, which I'm not anymore.

65

:

I eat all the animals now,

which is so weird to say.

66

:

But like, when I was vegetarian, I

would always research like, okay, is

67

:

there any vegetarian food for me to eat?

68

:

I know people who have gluten

intolerance do this too.

69

:

Okay.

70

:

Like what do I have to eat beforehand?

71

:

Or will there be food for me , at the.

72

:

Event.

73

:

So just switch your mindset around

that, around like the drinking part

74

:

of it versus the food part of it.

75

:

Three.

76

:

Be confident in your

decision not to drink.

77

:

It is okay to decline alcoholic beverages.

78

:

If they don't align with your lifestyle

or your preference, or you're just taking

79

:

a break from drinking even for that day.

80

:

Remember.

81

:

You're attending the event to network

and further your goals, not to conform to

82

:

somebody else's social expectation review.

83

:

Be confident in your decision to

abstain from alcohol, that was your

84

:

choice and you made it for a reason.

85

:

For use non-alcoholic alternatives.

86

:

Most networking events actually do offer

a variety of non-alcoholic beverages.

87

:

So don't hesitate to explore

your options, whether it's.

88

:

Sparkling water, perhaps

a mocktail, a specialty.

89

:

So days there's usually

something for everyone.

90

:

So experiment with different

drinks to find the ones that you

91

:

enjoy and use them as conversation

starters with fellow attendees.

92

:

If you want to talk about the fact that

you're taking a break or you're not

93

:

drinking, you're, you're doing mocktails.

94

:

I remember one time I was at an

event and this particular time in

95

:

my life, I was not allowed to drink

alcohol because I was recovering from

96

:

some pretty bad vocal cord polyps.

97

:

And I let the bartender know, like I

can't have a drink, but I still want to,

98

:

you know, I was still want to have like

a fun cocktail and he made me this like

99

:

fancy, fake martini and it was paid.

100

:

It looked like, honestly, it

looked like a cosmopolitan.

101

:

Um, and it was pretty and , nobody would

have known that it was a mocktail, except

102

:

I told everybody I'm like, oh, doesn't

this look like a cocktail, but it's not.

103

:

It's a mocked up anyways.

104

:

Have fun with it.

105

:

Utilize those non-alcoholic alternatives.

106

:

And five.

107

:

You don't know anybody in explanation,

I've attended a number of networking

108

:

events while abstaining from alcohol.

109

:

Whether it be because I was

healing my vocal chords, I was on

110

:

antibiotics for an ear infection when

I just didn't feel like drinking.

111

:

And inevitably someone always

asks, why aren't you drinking?

112

:

And now most of you know, I'm an open

book and this question doesn't offend me.

113

:

Except for the time a guy

literally patted me on the stomach

114

:

and asked if I was pregnant.

115

:

That literally happened

and it pissed me off.

116

:

Remember.

117

:

This is your decision.

118

:

You don't know anybody in explanation.

119

:

It's none of their fucking

business if you drink or not.

120

:

So don't explain yourself if you don't

want to just simply state not drinking

121

:

at night and move on, change the subject.

122

:

Now.

123

:

I mentioned, Ryan was supposed to be on

this podcast and that he's a sober coach.

124

:

Well, he has a 21 day sober fitness

challenge that I've decided to join.

125

:

It's not like a group thing.

126

:

You don't do it all together.

127

:

You do it on your own.

128

:

And every day you get an email

from Ryan with tips and ideas

129

:

to help you along the way.

130

:

I'm starting on March 31st.

131

:

So I'm now in the fourth day.

132

:

Of this journey and I'm actually

really excited to report back to you

133

:

about the journey, what I learned in

regards to lots of things, my energy,

134

:

how I navigate social situations, how

I navigated networking situations,

135

:

how I navigated stressful days.

136

:

And when I would normally

relax with a glass of wine.

137

:

Like, I'm super excited for it.

138

:

So for the three weeks during

this challenge, I will be

139

:

highlighting alcohol free drinks.

140

:

So alcohol-free beers

or wine or mocktails.

141

:

In case any of you want to

take this challenge with me?

142

:

I will also put a link in the show

notes to Ryan's website, where you

143

:

can sign up for the challenge and

get your daily emails from him.

144

:

All right friends.

145

:

So now onto that drink of the

week, which you might've already

146

:

heard of athletic brewing, which

is a completely non-alcoholic

147

:

brewery and their shit is good.

148

:

Like it tastes like the real stuff.

149

:

And I heard somewhere that they are

the fastest growing brewery in the

150

:

country right now, which is crazy

since it's all non-alcoholic stuff.

151

:

I mean, we have come so far

from O'Doul's haven't we.

152

:

Well today I am enjoying

really honestly, enjoying and

153

:

sharing the lemon Radler beer.

154

:

From them, which is literally it's

smooth, it's zesty, it's slightly

155

:

sweet, which you would expect.

156

:

Um, You know, so a Radler is like usually

two parts beer in one parts, lemonade.

157

:

And I don't know if that's

actually like a Shandy, but I

158

:

think Shandy is half and half.

159

:

So anyways, so you would expect

like a little bit of sweetness.

160

:

, from it . Anyways.

161

:

I'm enjoying it.

162

:

It's certainly going these, these

kinds of options are certainly going

163

:

to help me on this 21 day journey.

164

:

Um, but yeah, I'm super excited for it.

165

:

All right friends.

166

:

That's all for this week.
