Speaker:

I'd like to thank my terrible

childhood and the academy in not order.

2

:

That was the opening line from

Robert Downey Jr's unforgettable

3

:

academy awards, acceptance speech.

4

:

His words were not just an acceptance

speech, but a Testament to resilience, a

5

:

celebration of triumph, over adversity.

6

:

And honestly, I've been thinking

about them ever since he spoke them.

7

:

Welcome to episode 1 98 of this shit

works a podcast dedicated to all

8

:

things, networking, relationship

building and business development.

9

:

I'm your host, Julie Brown speaker,

author and networking coach.

10

:

And today I'm talking about

how adversity can shape us in

11

:

profound ways for better or worse.

12

:

It can break us down

or it can build us up.

13

:

It's a crucible that tests our resilience,

our strength and our character.

14

:

My terrible childhood.

15

:

It's a stark acknowledgement of

the struggles that shaped him.

16

:

Childhood experiences, both good and

bad leave indelible marks on our lives.

17

:

They mold us, shape us.

18

:

And sometimes they scar us.

19

:

Adversity doesn't discriminate.

20

:

It's the great equalizer,

touching the lives of celebrities

21

:

and everyday people alike.

22

:

But what sets individuals apart

is how they respond to it.

23

:

Downey Jr.

24

:

Has spoken previously about growing

up with parents who are drug addicts

25

:

and said that his father gave him

drugs at a very young age quote

26

:

marijuana for the first time, age

six and a little Coke as a child.

27

:

That lifestyle and early exposure

to drugs led to multiple arrests

28

:

and eventually incarceration.

29

:

For as long as five years between

:

30

:

Was arrested as many as five times.

31

:

He was sentenced to 15 months behind

bars due to charges related to drugs.

32

:

The illegal substances included

heroin, marijuana, and cocaine.

33

:

Because of this Downey Jr.

34

:

Became uninsurable as an actor.

35

:

After reading that last sentence,

it's surprising that that same

36

:

person recently won an academy award.

37

:

And is one of the highest paid actors

in Hollywood history due in large part

38

:

to his reoccurring role as iron man.

39

:

So with that, let's

remember that adversity.

40

:

Isn't the end of the story.

41

:

It's just the beginning of a new chapter.

42

:

It's an opportunity for growth.

43

:

For transportation and for finding

the light in the darkest places.

44

:

It's also an opportunity to open

our hearts, to the kinds of people

45

:

who will change us for the better.

46

:

And not hurt us.

47

:

In his speech, Downey Jr.

48

:

Talks about his wife, Susan

Downey, who he humorously

49

:

referred to as his veterinarian.

50

:

Quote.

51

:

She found me a snarling rescue

pet and loved me back to life.

52

:

That's why I'm here.

53

:

And quote.

54

:

So many people are facing some sort

of adversity, whether it be overcoming

55

:

the echoes of their own shitty

childhoods wrestling with self-doubt

56

:

facing rejection, living in poverty,

dealing with a physical injury or

57

:

a mental illness, racism, sexism,

or the myriad other isms out there.

58

:

So as we reflect on Downey Jr's

words, let's remember that adversity.

59

:

Isn't the end of the story.

60

:

Like I said, it's just a chapter of

your life that you find yourself in,

61

:

but it's also an opportunity for growth.

62

:

Transformation and for finding

light in the darkest of places.

63

:

Okay.

64

:

Friends.

65

:

Onto the drink of the week, which

since Downey Jr has been sober since

66

:

2003, we will be featuring a mocktail.

67

:

It is the iron man inspired

Tony stark mocktail, and here's

68

:

what you're going to need.

69

:

juice of half a lemon, a dash of a

70

:

Gavi sweetener, sparkling lemonade,

and a lemon slice for garnish.

71

:

What you're going to do is in a glass.

72

:

You're going to combine the raspberries

of lemon juice, Nia Gavi and muddle

73

:

metal, metal, metal, metal, and then

strain that juice, that good stuff.
