Episode 120

Happy THINKsgiving

Published on: 23rd November, 2022

What do you think is this something that you could make happen in your business if you spent an entire week, working on it, uninterrupted? No meetings, no phone calls, just your undivided attention on a goal that you have.

This is what a “think week” can do for your business. One week, once a quarter to dedicate to advancing your goals.

Listen in to this weeks episode where I discuss the think week I took in August and the one I am taking right now.

Speaker:

Thanksgiving is tomorrow and a while back, I had decided that

Speaker:

this year, the week of Thanksgiving would be a think week for Welcome to

Speaker:

episode one 20 of this shit works.

Speaker:

I'm your host, Julie Brown author, networking coach and professional speaker.

Speaker:

And today I am discussing the idea of thinks giving.

Speaker:

During the summer.

Speaker:

One of my speaker connections mentioned on LinkedIn that he spends one week,

Speaker:

every quarter away from the office and what he calls a think week.

Speaker:

He rents a VRVO or an Airbnb somewhere quiet and relaxing

Speaker:

and spends the entire week.

Speaker:

Reading the business books that have been piling up on his desk.

Speaker:

Or tapping into the business articles and podcasts that he has bookmarked

Speaker:

all for fresh new ideas that he can use to improve his business.

Speaker:

Pure genius.

Speaker:

I thought, think A week with uninterrupted time to dig into all the

Speaker:

books that have been recommended to us.

Speaker:

All the articles we know we should read.

Speaker:

Or just time to sit and think about what we want for our business, but

Speaker:

we don't have time to do that because we're jumping from meeting to meeting

Speaker:

or running around to this and that.

Speaker:

So in August, I did a think week of my own.

Speaker:

Kind of, I cleared my schedule and went to my beach house in Rhode Island.

Speaker:

I didn't spend the week reading books or watching Ted talks.

Speaker:

I spent the week getting my shit together in my business.

Speaker:

Setting up online project management boards for the podcast,

Speaker:

so that each episode has its own checklist and stays on track.

Speaker:

Setting up another board for all my upcoming speaking engagements so that

Speaker:

nothing falls through the cracks.

Speaker:

Working on ideas for new offerings from my business.

Speaker:

Not a zoom meeting to be had.

Speaker:

Just working on the business for a solid week.

Speaker:

When the week was over.

Speaker:

I felt way more organized and ready to jump into What was going to be my

Speaker:

three busiest speaking months ever.

Speaker:

And you knew what.

Speaker:

When the week was over, even though I had that looming on this schedule.

Speaker:

I felt relaxed.

Speaker:

I then have to do something like this every quarter.

Speaker:

Clear the schedule, get away from the office and just work on the business.

Speaker:

So as we speak, I am again, away at the beach house and a think

Speaker:

week, but this week I'm working on what is hopefully my Ted talk.

Speaker:

I'm applying for a talk that will take place in may.

Speaker:

The application is due December 16.

Speaker:

With auditions in January.

Speaker:

There are seven spots available and in general, about 200 applicants.

Speaker:

So the competition is pretty fierce.

Speaker:

I'll be working on that.

Speaker:

As well as new speaker strategies so that I can get booked on more stages and change

Speaker:

more people's lives by getting them to embrace and fall in love with networking.

Speaker:

I have yet to take a week and just read.

Speaker:

Which I also need to do.

Speaker:

I heard a quote, once that said in five years, you won't be the same

Speaker:

exact person except for the books you read and the people you need.

Speaker:

Well, I've got that whole meeting people thing down.

Speaker:

And now we need to work on catching up on all the reading I have to do.

Speaker:

So sometime between January one and March 31st, I need to find

Speaker:

another week to clear my schedule.

Speaker:

And just read.

Speaker:

And absorb knowledge.

Speaker:

Do you have a business book that has changed your career?

Speaker:

Besides mine, you know, I've already read that one.

Speaker:

I hope you have.

Speaker:

If you do have a book that has changed your career or changed

Speaker:

your mindset about business?

Speaker:

Would you mind sharing it with me?

Speaker:

Sending you a message on LinkedIn or through my website.

Speaker:

I need to get all my books together for my next think week.

Speaker:

What do you think?

Speaker:

Is this something that you could make happen in your business?

Speaker:

Or maybe done this before.

Speaker:

If you did, what were the outcomes?

Speaker:

What did you

Speaker:

Did you do it again?

Speaker:

Do you make it a regular part of your business strategy?

Speaker:

Reach out to me and let me know on that as well.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Onto the drink of the week.

Speaker:

A little while ago, Chris and I read our neighborhood bar and there was a

Speaker:

drink on the menu that had Drambuie mez, cow and apple ginger syrup.

Speaker:

And lemon juice.

Speaker:

I can't remember what it was called.

Speaker:

I scoured the internet for something like it and came across a drink

Speaker:

called the next is Cillian.

Speaker:

So like penicillin, but the Mexican Lillian, cause there is a cocktail.

Speaker:

Which anyways, it looks really yummy and ticks off a lot of the

Speaker:

same boxes as the drink I had.

Speaker:

When I was at the bar and this is what I'm bringing to Thanksgiving tomorrow.

Speaker:

Here's what you're going to need if you want to make it.

Speaker:

And I'm riffing on this a little bit, because the measurements were in

Speaker:

centiliters and I'm like, what the fuck?

Speaker:

Centiliters okay.

Speaker:

Anyways, I digress.

Speaker:

This is what you're going to need to do.

Speaker:

First.

Speaker:

You're gonna need to make some ginger honey syrup.

Speaker:

What you're going to do is you're gonna appeal about a

Speaker:

three inch piece of ginger more.

Speaker:

If you like it, super, super gingery, and then slice that ginger.

Speaker:

You need to have a cup of honey and a half cup of water.

Speaker:

Add all of that to a sauce pan, bring to a boil and then reduce

Speaker:

to a simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.

Speaker:

Let cool.

Speaker:

And then refrigerate overnight and strain the next day.

Speaker:

If you're just listening to this on Thanksgiving and you're like, okay,

Speaker:

I can't refrigerate it overnight.

Speaker:

Don't worry.

Speaker:

Just put more ginger in it.

Speaker:

So it's more gingery and then like, let it come to room

Speaker:

temperature, and then strain it.

Speaker:

To make the cocktail, take two ounces of mess.

Speaker:

Count.

Speaker:

Three fours ounce of Drambuie three, four ounces of honey ginger syrup

Speaker:

and the juice of half a lemon.

Speaker:

In a cocktail shaker muddle another piece of fresh ginger.

Speaker:

With the honey ginger syrup to make it extra gingery.

Speaker:

Add the mez calendar.

Speaker:

I believe lemon.

Speaker:

At ice shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake.

Speaker:

Double strain into a rocks glass with one of those really fun like cubes or circle.

Speaker:

Ice cubes.

Speaker:

And enjoy.

Speaker:

Have a great freaking Thanksgiving.

Speaker:

All right friends.

Speaker:

That's it for this week.

Speaker:

I hope you have a fan.

Speaker:

Fantastic Thanksgiving.
