July 3rd to August 11th or the official dog days of summer.
Julie:And a period of time in which the sun occupies the same
Julie:region of the sky as serious.
Julie:The brightest star visible from any part of earth.
Julie:Sirius also known as the dog star.
Julie:It was part of the constellation canis major, the greater dog, which is where
Julie:the term dog days of summer comes from.
Julie:And you thought it was due to the heat.
Julie:Welcome to episode 1 54 of this shit works, a podcast dedicated to all
Julie:things, networking, relationship building and business development.
Julie:I'm your host, Julie Brown speaker, author and networking coach and
Julie:on today's this shit works short.
Julie:I am discussing how to find work-life balance, not just during the dog
Julie:days of summer, but all summer long.
Julie:Every summer, I vow to take more time off during the summer to relax and
Julie:enjoy the 12 short weeks of summer that we get here in the Northeast.
Julie:And every year I seem to fail miserably at it, but not this year.
Julie:This is my summer of slowing down.
Julie:Well sort of actually, it's more like my August of slowing down really.
Julie:As I'm traveling most of July.
Julie:Which is not ideal, and frankly is going to exhaust me, which is one
Julie:of the reasons why I'm producing.
Julie:These shorter episodes for the month of July.
Julie:My actually may, it may go into August as well because come home, I
Julie:guess it's officially slow the fuck down and enjoy the summertime for me.
Julie:Not that I won't be working, I will be, but I'll be working a hundred
Julie:percent from my vacation house, wearing shorts and a tank top all month long
Julie:and taking my lunch breaks at the.
Julie:Beach.
Julie:What I will be doing is very similar to advice that I read in a recent
Julie:entrepreneur magazine article titled seven surefire ways to find
Julie:work-life balance this summer.
Julie:And I'm going to share the tips with you.
Julie:Um, now I'm also going to put a link to the entire article in the show
Julie:notes so that you can read it in its entirety, where they expand upon each
Julie:of these seven ways in greater detail.
Julie:But for now, here they are.
Julie:One work outside.
Julie:Hop on free wifi somewhere and soak up a couple hours of sun while you work.
Julie:Or if your wifi goes outside and you have an outdoor space
Julie:at your home work outside.
Julie:Two.
Julie:Try a workation check into a hotel or resort so you can enjoy all the amenities
Julie:of the pool spa, et cetera, while you work or after your work is done.
Julie:I've done this while traveling before I've booked an extra JJ.
Julie:So I could work from the hotel roof, deck pools, being a cocktail and returning
Julie:emails before I fly home the next day.
Julie:Three.
Julie:Enjoy a fun read, put down the business books and pick up a beach, read a
Julie:thriller, a romance novel who cares.
Julie:Just take your mind out of business for a little while each day.
Julie:For.
Julie:Get creative, meaning spend time doing something that flexes your
Julie:creative muscles, paint, dance sing, take a pottery class, do something
Julie:that you enjoyed as doing as a kid.
Julie:For me during the month of August, it's going to be getting up in the morning
Julie:and going paddleboarding before the water is too busy with boats and whatnot.
Julie:Five.
Julie:Schedule your emails review and respond to emails at a specific time each
Julie:day, don't constantly be checking and responding to emails, which is a
Julie:hundred percent effecting your attention and ability to focus on the other
Julie:shit that you should be working on.
Julie:I really do like this tip.
Julie:Six.
Julie:DIY happy hour.
Julie:It's not what you think.
Julie:Although, making a cocktail for yourself can be, can be nice too.
Julie:They mean a different kind of happy art, meaning schedule one
Julie:hour for yourself after work, to do something you really like.
Julie:Like go to yoga, check out a movie, meet up with a friend or
Julie:walk something different than the typical cocktails at five.
Julie:And seven.
Julie:Unplug shut it all down.
Julie:Find an hour or a day, if you can manage to just shut it all down and unplug
Julie:everything electronic from your life, put that out of office on and really mean it.
Julie:I remember a couple of years ago for 4th of July weekend, I put my phone
Julie:in a drawer and I left it there.
Julie:I never checked in on it.
Julie:And you know what?
Julie:It was fucking amazing.
Julie:I was so less stressed.
Julie:And, you know, somehow people still found me, like they popped over my house
Julie:instead of texting me, which was awesome.
Julie:Try it just for an hour or a half day put it in drawer and don't look at it
Julie:and don't get notifications push to your watch and see how much more awesome you
Julie:feel at the end of all of those times that you do it So That's it Seven tips
