TSW Short: 4,000 Weeks to Live

Published on: 26th July, 2023

4,000 weeks. If you live to approximately 80 years old that is the amount of time you get.

Somehow looking at it in terms of weeks and not years makes it seem shorter and more precious. Would knowing you only had 4,000 weeks to live cause you to look at life differently and live it with more passion and purpose?

4,000 Weeks to Live

Transcript
Speaker:

I once had a psychic tell me I was going to live to 97 years old.

Speaker:

That wasn't jazzed by this idea?

Speaker:

Not only because I didn't think psychics were allowed to tell

Speaker:

you when you were going to die.

Speaker:

But also because my Nana had recently died at the age of 97 and her

Speaker:

quality of life, the last five or so years, she was on earth was well.

Speaker:

Pretty fucking shitty.

Speaker:

The truth is.

Speaker:

None of us is born with a death date.

Speaker:

We don't know when we're going to die.

Speaker:

We certainly don't like to think about it.

Speaker:

And this can trick us into thinking that we have unlimited time.

Speaker:

Welcome to episode 1 55 of the shit works.

Speaker:

A podcast dedicated to all things, networking, relationship

Speaker:

building and business development.

Speaker:

I'm your host, Julie Brown.

Speaker:

Speaker author and networking coach.

Speaker:

And in today's the shit work short.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

I'm going to do it for the month of August as well.

Speaker:

I'm discussing the idea of time.

Speaker:

Time management and what really matters.

Speaker:

There is a book by Oliver Bergman titled 4,000 weeks.

Speaker:

He says that if you live to 80 years old, that is approximately that

Speaker:

number of weeks, you get to live.

Speaker:

And that when you look at that number, it seems devastatingly short.

Speaker:

And because of this, you should aim to live a life filled with things that are

Speaker:

important to you that make you happy.

Speaker:

And not worry so much about getting everything on your

Speaker:

work to do list done, you know?

Speaker:

Enjoy life.

Speaker:

So that particular psychics prophecy aside at 47 years old, I have

Speaker:

lived to approximately 2,450 weeks.

Speaker:

And with Berkman's thinking I have about 1,550 weeks left.

Speaker:

It just doesn't seem like enough time.

Speaker:

And I can see looking at that number, causing me to think about every

Speaker:

decision I make in terms of do I really want to be spending any of

Speaker:

my remaining 1,550 weeks doing this?

Speaker:

There's a quote in the book related to just how brief this timeframe feels.

Speaker:

Birkman wants.

Speaker:

And I quote to see if we can discover or recover some ways of thinking about time

Speaker:

that do justice to our real situation.

Speaker:

To the outrageous brevity and shimmering possibilities of our 4,000 weeks.

Speaker:

I'm not writing this podcast to scare you or depress you, I'm writing this podcast

Speaker:

to give you permission to do all the things that you've been wanting to do, but

Speaker:

you have been putting off for one reason or another, mostly because you think

Speaker:

that there will always be time to do it.

Speaker:

So take that trip, make that call, do the damn thing.

Speaker:

We were getting more in life.

Speaker:

The things we didn't do than the things we did.

Speaker:

4,000 weeks.

Speaker:

I hope you will have more than that.

Speaker:

I hope I have more than that.

Speaker:

But whatever you're going to do with the time left, what

Speaker:

adventures could you go on?

Speaker:

What relationships could you make?

Speaker:

What relationships could you mend?

Speaker:

What do you want to learn?

Speaker:

What do you want to experience?

Speaker:

What do you want to do with your one precious life?

Speaker:

And who do you want to do those things with?

Speaker:

And what shitty to do list is holding you back from those moments.

Speaker:

Growing up by the ocean, living by, you know, the shore, my entire life.

Speaker:

I've always known the saying that time and tide waits for no man.

Speaker:

Time keeps marching on and you can't get time back.

Speaker:

Which is why you should never, and I mean, never sit through one of those

Speaker:

wretched timeshare presentations.

Speaker:

When you are on vacation, number one, they are a scam.

Speaker:

Number two, you are never going to buy a timeshare anywhere.

Speaker:

And number three, whatever freebie they have promised you for sitting through

Speaker:

that bullshit presentation is not worth a minute of your precious vacation time.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Are we clear on that we will not be spending any of our time

Speaker:

in shitty situations like that.

Speaker:

Perfect.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

All right, friends, that's all for this week because this is

Speaker:

another, this shit works short.

Speaker:

There isn't a drink of the week.

Speaker:

Drink, whatever you want, but you know, Life is short.

Speaker:

So maybe drink the good stuff.
