Episode 168

My Salem Massachusetts Ghost Story

Published on: 25th October, 2023

One crisp October night in 2001 I visited the famous burial ground of some of those persecuted and killed during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692.

I’ll never forget that night and the ghostly images captured on film.

Speaker:

Salem Massachusetts is famously

known for the witch trials that

2

:

occurred in 1692, during which many

people were accused of practicing

3

:

witchcraft and several were executed.

4

:

The town's historical

significance in this regard.

5

:

Draws visitors interested in the history

of witchcraft and the McCobb year round.

6

:

But October.

7

:

October has been Sanlam

really comes alive.

8

:

Welcome to episode 1 68.

9

:

Oh, this shit works.

10

:

A podcast dedicated to all

things, networking, relationship

11

:

building and business development.

12

:

I'm your host, Julie Brown.

13

:

Speaker author and networking coach.

14

:

And today on my annual Halloween episode.

15

:

I'm going to share my Salem

graveyard story with you.

16

:

salem has a reputation for being

a haunted town with numerous

17

:

allegedly haunted locations.

18

:

People visit to take part in

ghost tours, exploring haunted

19

:

houses and hearing Erie stories.

20

:

And I'm no different.

21

:

I love a good ghost story.

22

:

But up until this point,

I'd never been part of one.

23

:

It was October, 2001, my roommate,

Holly and I had decided to drive

24

:

from Boston to Salem to wander

around during the Halloween

25

:

festivities and happenings one night.

26

:

We were excited to see the town

all decorated for Halloween

27

:

and visit the historical spots.

28

:

Including one of the graveyards where

some of the accused and killed during

29

:

the Salem witch trials were buried.

30

:

The graveyard was a little bit

of a walk from the activity

31

:

and bustle of the main square.

32

:

We ventured down the dimly-lit street.

33

:

The air cold and crisp

in the October darkness.

34

:

The house is on the right side,

stood, shrouded, and shadows,

35

:

their steps adorned with grinning

jack-o-lanterns on the opposite side.

36

:

The ancient cemetery lane silence.

37

:

It's weathered tombstones rising,

like crooked teeth in the Moonlight.

38

:

The only sound was the rustling

of fallen leaves until.

39

:

A huge beast of a dog started

running towards us barking

40

:

and baring its teeth, Haley.

41

:

And I froze with fear as the dog

came barreling towards us stopping.

42

:

Mere inches from us.

43

:

And only when the chain that its

collar was tied to had reached its full

44

:

length and pulled the dog backwards.

45

:

Holly.

46

:

And I stood holding onto each other,

breathing hard and then realizing we

47

:

weren't about to become that dog's dinner.

48

:

And started laughing.

49

:

We crossed the small street

and headed into the graveyard.

50

:

I'm not sure how or why

considering the time of year,

51

:

but we were the only ones there.

52

:

As we walked around the graveyard.

53

:

Holly took out a camera.

54

:

It was a Nikon SLR, which she

had borrowed from her sister.

55

:

Which back in 2001 still

took film digital SLRs.

56

:

Wouldn't be wildly affordable for a while.

57

:

I didn't know that Holly

had brought the camera.

58

:

And when I saw it, I

asked her not to use it.

59

:

Why she said.

60

:

Because I said, if you use that camera.

61

:

When you develop the film, there are

going to be things on those pictures that

62

:

we're not going to be able to explain.

63

:

And I don't want any part of it.

64

:

She joked that I was crazy.

65

:

Come on.

66

:

She said, we came all the way here.

67

:

Let's take some pictures.

68

:

So against my better judgment, I stood

next to a couple of the gravestones

69

:

while she snapped picture after picture.

70

:

She then handed the camera to me

and I took some pictures of her.

71

:

We left the graveyard, mindful

of the dog and stayed on the

72

:

cemetery side of the street.

73

:

We ended up walking through town for a

little while longer and then headed home.

74

:

A few days later, I came home

after work to find Holly sitting

75

:

at the table in the kitchen.

76

:

I walked in and had my back to

her while I rifled through my

77

:

bag that I tossed on the counter.

78

:

I got the pictures back from the cemetery.

79

:

She said,

80

:

I turned around slowly and

her face said everything.

81

:

She opened up the envelope, containing the

pictures and laid them out on the table.

82

:

Every single picture we had taken

in a cemetery was covered in orbs.

83

:

And not just orbs, but streaks of light,

all colors that shot in from all sides.

84

:

And curved up and around our bodies.

85

:

And some of them, the light streaks

covered the entire picture and you

86

:

couldn't see what was behind them.

87

:

There was no light source

that could have done this.

88

:

No explanation for the

orbs that surrounded us.

89

:

I know there are things we

cannot see with our own eyes, but

90

:

can be captured in other ways.

91

:

And this is exactly what

happened on that night.

92

:

I've never forgotten that night.

93

:

Obviously never forgotten the

images, showing the spirits

94

:

and the residual energy that

is contained in that graveyard.

95

:

That I've had other experiences

and maybe in future Halloween

96

:

episodes, I'll get into them.

97

:

But every Halloween, I

always think of that night.

98

:

What about you?

99

:

Do you have your own ghost story?

100

:

If you do, I'd love to hear it.

101

:

Okay.

102

:

Onto the drink of the week, which is

the Hocus Pocus, which is brew, which

103

:

of course we have to have a witch's

cocktail for talking about Salem.

104

:

This recipe comes from

best day of the week.

105

:

Here's what you're going to need.

106

:

Two ounces of Empress, 1908 gen.

107

:

And now normally I would say, oh, use

whatever Jen you want, but I'm not going

108

:

to say that this time, because Jen is

purple and it's important that you have

109

:

the purple gin in order to get this Pooky

blue and purple layering of this cocktail.

110

:

Okay.

111

:

So two ounces of embers, 1908 gen.

112

:

One ounce of blue Curacao, one ounce of

lemon juice, soda, water, and crushed ice.

113

:

Now this is a layer drink.

114

:

So to get the layers of color,

you're going to need to fill a

115

:

highball glass with crushed ice,

and then do it in this order.

116

:

Next, add the blue Curacao.

117

:

Then when that is settled,

follow that by the lemon juice.

118

:

Then add the gin and

then the top with soda.

119

:

Now.

120

:

You got to pour these ingredients gently

in order to do that, to get this layering.

121

:

And I like to, from, in my back from

my bartending days in order to do

122

:

that, I would pour over the back of

a spoon and that helps you pour more

123

:

gently and get that layering effect.

124

:

Okay.

125

:

It's really cool.

126

:

It looks really cool when you do it.

127

:

Cause it's like, it's like blue and yellow

and purple and then it's all spooky.

128

:

All right friends.

129

:

That's all for this week.
